I choose four different types of chalk for my reviews and all of them are lose chalk and liquid chalk. I used the block chalk before for rock climbing and it was a pain in the butt to keep on having to crush them. Even though the block chalk is cheaper, I do not mind spending the extra dollar for the convenient and quality chalk. Block chalk is not on the list for this review.
Each of the chalk that I reviewed is different types of chalk. I hope you’ll find it useful for your own athletic journey.

FrictionLabs Loose Gym Chalk – Unicorn Dust, Gorilla Grip, & Bam Bam
Three different texture chalks for personal texture preference designed for rock climbers with the highest quality on gripping control while protecting the skin from drying and cracking.
I love the name unicorn dust. My daughter loves unicorns. We are tempted to get her the unicorn dust just because of its name. However, she would not have any use for it. =(
We bought a bag of Gorilla Grip for my son’s birthday. It is by far his favorite chalk for rock climbing. He loved how his hand stayed dry and more grippy than the other chalk.

Refillable Chalk Ball with 65 Gram (2.3 oz) Capacity, Comes Full
Fine white powdered chalk in a premium grade cotton sock with a drawstring to keep the chalk contained. I generally have the chalk ball in addition to the loose chalk in my chalk bag. I like to squeeze the soft chalk ball after a rough climb especially if the holds are brand new and they feel like sandpaper. The soft chalk ball feels really nice and soft against my hands. It’s like a little massager.

FrictionLabs Secret Stuff Chalk Cream
It is a liquid chalk that dries quickly and leaves a light coating of chalk on your hands. It works great with sweaty hands in keeping them dry. One bottle of liquid chalk goes a long way for at least 100 hundred uses.
It does leave a residue of chalk when it dries, however, the liquid chalk gets into every nook and cranny of your hand and applied thoroughly then loose chalk. It will not leave any sticky residue because there is no drying agent.

2 thoughts on “Climbing Chalk Reviews”
Hello Ha,
Loved our review on rock climbing chalk. This is something I have never tried even though I am very active. My wife’s brother lives in Fort Collins, CO and he is constantly rock climbing and biking. When he comes to town this weekend I am going to ask him about his favorite rock climbing chalk.
All of the ones you reviewed look like they received pretty high marks. Is there any one or two top characteristics to look for in a good rock climbing chalk? I appreciate your expertise and suggestions!
All the best,
Mat A.
Thank you Mat A for your thoughts. You asked a great question. Two top characteristics to look for in a good rock climbing chalk are
1. The texture of the chalk
The texture is more for personal preferences that you like to feel
against your hands. There are three types of texture: fine powder,
coarse, and chunky. For me I like the fine powder and the softness of
it. When I climb my hands are beat up / scratch up against the rough
surface of the rocks or the artificial rocks. Especially the
artificially rocks feel like sand paper. The powder feels really nice
when I dunk my hand in the chalk pouch.
2. The grippiness of the chalk — how well is your grip against the rocks.
The grippiness of the chalk is very helpful for my fingers and hands against sloper holds. The sloper holds are typically round like grapefruit shapes. It gets pretty slippery if your hands are sweaty. The grippiness of your hands also depends on the your grip strength as well. The chalk is an additional bonus to help the hands stick to the holds. This characteristic is much more subtle and hard to tell until you test it out against the rock holds.
Thank you again for your question. If there are further questions, please feel free to send them my way.
