Edelrid Ohm Assisted Braking Resistor, Product Overview

Edelrid Ohm Assisted Braking Resistor is a device that increases the rope friction when there is a large weight difference between the belayer and the lead climber. The increased friction on the rope slow down the fall and allow the lighter belayer more control in braking and lowering the heavier climber.

The OHM is clipped indirectly to the first bolt with the rope attached. It also supports the belayer from being hoisted off the ground past the first bolt.

It is recommended with the weight difference for the belayer and climber between 10 to 40kg or 22 to 88 pounds with a minimum weight belayer of 40kg or 88 pounds. The OHM is compatible with ropes from 8.9 – 11mm. Click here ==> the OHM USER MANUAL for more details on how to use it.

The OHM comes with a quick link, dogbone, and a key lock carabiner.

The Good & the Bad

The Good:

Edelrid Ohm breaking resistor for climbing rope closed, right side

PRO #1 It is great for lighter belayer in catching a heavier climber’s fall. The increased friction on the rope slows down the climber’s fall and reduces the hauling of the belayer off the ground.

PRO #2 The belayer can lower the climber with more controlled and ease

PRO #3 Build mental confidence for both the belayer and the climber. The climber can climb with more confidence and the belayer can belay knowing that he or she can catch the climber safely.

The Bad:

CON #1 The OHM is heavy. That is the main complaint from many customers who used it. The OHM weighs 470g or about 1 pound.

CON #2 The angle of the rope can create too much friction when not needed. When the belayer stands right underneath the Ohm, there is less friction added than when the belayer is further away from the Ohm and wall. This creates a sharp angle in the rope under the Ohm. The friction increases which makes it harder for the climber to feed the rope through to clip. The sharp angle occurs when the route is more of an overhang. Pay attention to the rope by the OHM is key. Move around when the rope seems to be at an angle at the OHM and stay close to the wall.

CON #3 It is expensive. The price was another major complaint about the OHM. However, sometimes peace of mind outweighs the costs.

Who is Edelrid Ohm For?

Assisted Braking Resistor is great for a light belayer. When there is a large weight difference of 40 pounds or more between the belayer and lead climber, the increased friction on the rope help provides more control for the belayer. It is also a great substitution for a 50-pound sandbag.

My Final Opinion of Edelrid Ohm Assisted Braking Resistor

I think the Edelrid OHM is very cool. I was introduced to the OHM when I visited the ProjectRock climbing gym in Southern FL. They do not have a 50-pound sandbag or rope to anchor the light belayer. Instead, they lend me the OHM to use for belaying my husband on lead. I know my husband is not 100% confident when I belay him because I am much lighter. We are around a 70-pound difference. The OHM worked really well for us and gave us both peace of mind.

We do not often lead enough and it is expensive equipment so we are saving up for a possible anniversary or birthday present. Perhaps, when we have one of our own, we may lead more often. =)
