Mega Jul Sport, Product Overview
The Mega Jul Sport is the latest assisted braking tube-style belay device made by Edelrid. This is a passive assisted braking device because it does not have any moving parts. The braking mechanism relies purely on the simple shape and angle of the device to catch a fall.
The shape, size, and weight may seem dainty. However, it is tough, durable, light, and versatile making it a very well-rounded belay device for multi-purpose climbing. Edelrid took advantage of the shape and optimized it for the high braking performance and design with the robust stainless steel.
The belaying technique for this device is similar to a tubular belay device. However, when feeding out the rope, the belayer will need to push the thumb loop up so the rope can run through the device without locking up automatically. It may take a bit of belaying to get used to the motion.
The Mega Jul Sport is an extension of the original award-winning Mega Jul. The additional benefit is the support of larger rope diameter and smoother belaying.
The Good & the Bad
The Good:
PRO #1 – The Mega Jul Sport is stainless steel and very light in comparison to other assisted braking devices available in the market.
PRO #2 – Feeding the rope flow very smoothly and works well thicker rope up to 11mm
PRO #3 – Versatile for double rope in rappelling and abseiling. It is great for multi-pitch, alpine, and/or ice climbing.
PRO #4 – The price is also less expensive than many other assisted devices. The MSRP is $32.95.
The Bad:
CON #1 – The Mega Jul Sport is not as intuitive as some other devices. It is hard to learn in the beginning. It does take some time to get used to.
CON #2 – It may require some strength so it can be cumbersome to pull up on the thumb hook to release the friction on the rope.
Who is Mega Jul Sport For?
This Mega Jul Sport is great for seasoned climbers who like lightweight and appreciate the simplicity of the equipment without compromising the quality. Also, it is great for climbers who look for a single multi-functional belay device that gives them the flexibility to climb multi-pitch, alpine, or ice climbing as well as double rope rappelling and abseiling.
Mega Jul Sport Training Video
This is an instructional video of the Mega Jul and Micro Jul. The function for the Mega Jul Sport is the same as the Mega Jul. The primary difference is the support of a thicker rope. The Mega Jul Sport supports rope from 7.9 to 11mm while the Mega Jul supports 7.9 to 10.5mm and the Micro Jul supports the Flycatcher rope of 6.9mm.

My Final Opinion of Mega Jul Sport
The Mega Jul Sport is a simple, light, and effective belay device. The multi-functional aspect of the device is very attractive let alone the price.
I like the fact that it is light and can do multiple things. It would definitely make it worth the money. However, my hesitation is the learning curve. Currently, I am not doing as much outdoor climbing with rappelling or abseiling yet. It is something I do look forward to doing more in the near future. It is a little limited living in Florida where you can rappel into the swamps, maybe?
When I am climbing more outdoor with plenty of rappelling, abseiling, multi-pitch, etc, I would definitely check into getting myself one of these. Right now I am happy with my tubular and my ATC Pilot devices for the wonderful world of indoor climbing. =)
